Party Punisher is the latest album from Cool Sounds, the chameleonic musical project of Naarm/Melbourne's Dainis Lacey, out via Blossom Rot Records and Nice Guys Records.
Now over a decade into their existence, Party Punisher sees Cool Sounds build on their shape-shifting sound, and quietly, but definitively cement themselves as one of Melbourne's most affecting local acts.
The album was recorded in Lacey's apartment over a few weeks, with assistance from bandmate/producer Dylan Young (Good Morning, Way Dynamic, Snowy Band), whose deft production hand helps create a lush, kaleidoscopic sound that belies what one might expect from a home recording project.
Lacey says of the new record: "It’s a road album that captures scenes and stories from playing shows and traveling around Europe and the US. It includes near-death experiences and a sense of being thankful to be alive, a rough weekend in Vegas, oversharing Uber drivers, friends falling in love, a detailed account of buying a musical instrument (Congas!)"
Lacey recalls these significant events with humour and precision, and expertly gleans from the lineage of indie rock, 80s pop and alt-country to arrive at the perfect vessel for his songs. The result is Cool Sounds at their most playful and self-assured, a combination that is as welcoming as it is infectious.
