Julien and Carl met in 1994 at the Wangaratta Jazz Festival and formed an instant musical and personal bond that has endured unabated for over 30 years. Together, they have toured Outback Australia with Ruby Hunter, Paul Grabowsky and Archie Roach performing Ruby’s Story; toured Europe and Asia with the Australian Art Orchestra and Sruti Laya Ensemble; recorded and toured The Migration with the Stu Hunter Ensemble; and worked together at Garma Festival with the Young Wagilak group in the earliest incarnation of the Crossing Roper Bar project.

For much of the 2000s and 2010s, they performed regularly as a quartet in Sydney with Cameron Undy and Simon Barker, while also collaborating in a number of other groups and projects with artists including Scott Tinkler, Vince Jones, Jonathan Zwartz and Jim Black.

As far back as the turn of the century, Julien Wilson was described as “one of the most exciting musicians in the country… Wilson was always the real thing, exploiting the instrument’s warmth and sonic breadth to make gripping statements. The Melbourne saxophonist arrived on a shock wave in the early ’90s and has been vital to Australian creative music since.”
— Sydney Morning Herald

Perhaps one of the most astounding aspects of Carl Dewhurst is his chameleonic ability to sound equally at home shredding the blues, backing a singer Joe Pass-style, playing odd-meter, funk-fuelled jazz odysseys, performing in equal parts tasteful and blistering settings behind James Morrison or Vince Jones, or collaborating with Korean pansori singer Bae Il Dong and master drummer Simon Barker at the Lincoln Center in New York.

“…one of the warmest and most versatile jazz musicians to emerge here in the past decade. Dewhurst is an exceptional guitarist. He reinvents himself and his sound for different contexts, always playing with commitment, imagination and heart.”
— Sydney Morning Herald

For this special one-off performance at The JazzLab, Carl and Julien are excited to collaborate with the formidable team of Cuban bassist Yunior Terry and exciting young powerhouse drummer Ebs Daramola to perform a selection of jazz standards — both Australian and American — alongside a handful of original compositions.
