Vital Bits: Benjamin Skepper on Sound, Space & Total Immersion
Composer Benjamin Skepper joins Vital Bits ahead of his solo AV show and sound bath at Fitzroy Town Hall on Saturday 21 March. Returning to the studio ten years on, Ben reflects on the biggest project he’s attempted in Australia so far: hauling a grand piano upstairs, bringing in a spatial audience processor from Los Angeles, and transforming the hall with 11.4 channels of immersive sound.
Drawing on decades of work across classical music, electronics, noise, and performance, Ben talks about bringing his full practice together in one space. Piano, electric cello, and spatial audio all feed into a long-form listening experience designed to allow audiences to sit inside the sound. It’s an ambitious work from an artist interested less in explaining the music than in letting people experience it for themselves.
