Uncommon Sense: “Just Absolutely Meaningless” – Richard Denniss Unpacks Climate Modelling And Federal Politics

Dr Richard Denniss, Chief Economist at The Australia Institute, joins Amy on Uncommon Sense to share his thoughts about the final sitting week of federal parliament for 2021. A thorough look at the year so far, Denniss breaks down the Morrison Government's focus on ideological issues and the perpetuation of culture wars. The Coalition’s legislative priorities included a religious discrimination bill, as well as crackdowns on social media trolling, and a push to prevent supposed “voter fraud”. This is all whilst paying cursory attention to critical areas such as climate change — Richard takes us through the government’s modelling and “literally meaningless” plan to reach net-zero emissions by 2050. He also talks about their controversial move to prevent parliamentary debate on a federal integrity and anti-corruption watchdog, one of their election promises. As Richard says, “the last thing Scott Morrison wants is to debate his effectiveness on what he’s delivered, based on his policies.”
