Interview
Twang: Jim Lauderdale, 39 Records In
Jim Lauderdale joins Denise Hylands on Twang for a wide-ranging chat reflecting on his lengthy career. North Carolina–born but Nashville-made, he looks back on the long road to releasing his first bluegrass record. Once feeling “ancient” in his 40s, Jim now recognises those years as the days of youth.
Jim talks career-defining collaborations with Roland White, Elvis Costello, and Robert Hunter, and reflects on the joy of simply sticking with the craft - writing, performing, and improving matters even when business doesn’t move as planned.
He also shares a deep love for the late Bob Weir and the Grateful Dead, crediting their blend of intelligence, country influence, and musicianship to his own playing and songwriting.
Jim Lauderdale plays Brunswick Ballroom, Monday 9 March, 2026.
