The International Pop Underground: Anjimile on His New LP, Self-Acceptance, Shyness, Sufjan Stevens & Natalie Imbruglia's Torn
"The idea of this album came about when I met my partner two years ago, and fell in love," says Anjimile, of his new LP, You're Free to Go. The sixth album for the 32-year-old songwriter, born Anjimile Chithambo, has just been released on 4AD.
"I wrote the song You're Free to Go for her," he continues. "And I think that title, and that song, made me realise that I had a collection of songs that were maybe working themselves into an album."
Along with love songs, and tunes exploring self-acceptance and self-reflection, Anjimile realised that "a lot of the songs were about my relationship with my mother, who's transphobic, and I'm trans – and the challenges of navigating that."
Speaking with The International Pop Underground's Anthony Carew, Anjimile talks about You're Free to Go, Sufjan Stevens, singing about yourself in the third person, being a "shy guy", and covering Australia's national anthem – Natalie Imbruglia's Torn.
