Baseline: Panashe Mugayapi on Photo Series 'Beautiful Black Boys'
Nana is joined by Zimbabwean-born, UK-raised, Naarm‑based photographer and creative director Panashe Mugayapi on Baseline to chat about his photo series, Beautiful Black Boys.
The series centres African Australian men, challenging harmful stereotypes with vibrant, dignified portraiture. The project celebrates individuality, brotherhood and emotional strength, offering deeper representations of Black masculinity.
Nana and Panashe discuss the intimacy involved in taking someone’s portrait, how the project has evolved over time, and the ways it has shaped Panashe’s own understanding of Black masculinity. They also explore the community that has formed around the work and Panashe’s vision for Beautiful Black Boys.
Beautiful Black Boys will be exhibited as part of Through Our Eyes at Blak Dot Gallery from 14 February to 8 March 2026. Through Our Eyes invites audiences into a living archive where African‑Australian experiences are presented not as monolithic or marginal, but as richly textured, complex and foregrounded.
Keep up with Panashe here.
