Off the Record: Americana singer Joy Oladokun on her latest album 'Proof of Life'
Growing up in Arizona as the first-generation daughter of Nigerian immigrants, Joy Oladokun yearned to hear more experiences like her own reflected in the music she heard on the radio. Joy took to writing songs to express her day to day experience of moving through the world as a queer black person.
“I just want people to have music that helps them in the same way so much music has helped me.”
Brian Wise chats to Joy about the making of Proof of Life, her fourth studio album, and the most collaborative one yet. From writing songs to finding the perfect sound in the studio, Oladokun joined forces with a mix of old friends and new co-conspirators to make the finished product.
