Maps: Jen Cloher Reflects On The Magic And Legacy Of Milk! Records

Following last week’s announcement that beloved Melbourne indie Milk! Records will be closing at the end of 2023, Fee is joined by musician and label co-founder Jen Cloher to look back on 12 years of music and community.

Jen founded Milk! alongside Courtney Barnett in 2012 to release Courtney’s first EP I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris. Over the next decade the label would grow a passionate music community that stretched from Melbourne across the globe, releasing 60 titles along the way.

Jen and Fee have a long and emotional conversation about the label’s origins, reflecting on the indelible impact Milk! has had and the legacy it will leave.

“I would stand at these Milk! shows, and watch these amazing bands and see the affect they were having on the audience. And I'm so proud of the Milk! audience. You go to a Milk! show and there is a vibe - people come and they are so reverent and really there. That was the magic of Milk! Our audience was as much a part of it as the bands.”
