Indigenuity: Sissy Austin Takes Back the Track
Krystal is joined by Sissy Austin, an inspiring leader in the running and Indigenous community, to discuss the foundation of National Take Back the Track Day and her graduation from the Indigenous Marathon Foundation.
Sissy is a Peek Woorroong, Keerraay Woorroong, and Djab Wurrung First Nations woman living on Dja Dja Wurrung Country. She is a survivor of a running attack, a graduate of the Indigenous Marathon Project, and a three-time marathoner.
Sissy has turned her experience of surviving an attack while running into a force for change, with the inaugural Take Back the Track Day – taking place on 16 February – a chance to elevate the stories of women and gender-diverse runners. The initiative uses the power of storytelling to raise awareness about the violence and harassment they face.
“Take Back the Track has come from a place of healing and reclaiming that love for running after experiencing something so negative while running two years ago.”
