Indigenuity: Dr Troy Walker on Bone Health in Indigenous Communities
Yorta Yorta man and Deakin University researcher, Dr Troy Walker joins Indigenuity with Krystal De Napoli to discuss new research on bone health perspectives among Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Drawing on his background as a clinical chiropractor, Troy explains how patterns he saw in practice led him to focus on prevention, awareness, and community-led approaches to musculoskeletal health.
Through interviews with community members across Victoria, Troy and colleagues used Indigenous research frameworks and focus groups to understand how people think about bones, ageing, and strength.
He highlights the higher rates of fragility fractures among First Nations people, and the crucial role of resistance and impact exercise in maintaining bone density and muscle health. With strong community uptake already, Troy hopes the work will expand nationally - raising awareness that bone health deserves the same attention as heart or liver health, before injury occurs.
