Interview
Baseline: The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson with Tourmaline
Nana is joined in the studio by acclaimed artist, filmmaker, organiser, activist and writer, Tourmaline.
Together, they dig into the roots of Tourmaline’s now-showing exhibition at ACCA, Transcendent, her research into queer histories and legacies and her recently published biography on the life of the revolutionary LGBTQIA+ activist Marsha P. Johnson, which unveils her life, profound impact and enduring legacy.
“[Marsha] was one of the most important figures who created community and possibility for me and so many others… whether it was through my activism and organising or later through my art and archival work. I like to think I was hot on the heels of Marsha’s life.”
Transcendent is showing at ACCA until 15 March 2026. Tourmaline’s books, MARSHA: Marsha: The Joy and Defiance of Marsha P. Johnson and One Day in June are out now.
Keep up with Tourmaline here.
