Future Perfect: ASRC’s Hannah Dickinson On The Double Standards And Moral Panic Surrounding Recently Released Immigration Detainees

Dylan Bird is joined in studio by Hannah Dickinson, Principal Solicitor at the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre to unpack the moral panic, media coverage and government rhetoric towards immigration detainees released as a result of last year’s High Court decision that found indefinite detention in Australia was unlawful.

“We have robust and careful criminal justice systems in place that hold people accountable when they may have been at breach of the law – and just like anyone else those mechanisms were used but then [these] people were exposed to additional detention, deeply harmful detention, and released after that was acknowledged to be unlawful. It’s quite a bizarre and starkly different treatment of people and there doesn’t appear to be any justification.”
