Einstein A Go-Go: Dr Michalis Hadjikakou on Measuring the Environmental Impacts of Food Systems

Dr Michalis Hadjikakou is the co-director of the Planet-A research lab at Deakin University, where he specialises in developing analytical frameworks that quantify the environmental, social and economic impacts of food and land use systems. He joins Dr Shane to talk about his work and explains the many facets of food systems that need to be accounted for when measuring things like emissions or carbon footprint (for instance: farming and farming inputs, fertiliser usage, machinery, various processing stages, packaging, transportation of raw materials, refrigeration, and more).

They discuss the role of data, modelling, technology, and metrics in 'scoring' environmental impacts, as well as the launch of the ecoSwitch Australia app which communicates the carbon impact of packaged foods alongside a 'planetary health rating' to help consumers make better food choices.
