Indigenuity: Corey Tutt On Honouring Indigenous Languages In His Latest Children’s Book About Reptiles
Best-selling author and acclaimed STEM advocate, Corey Tutt, chats to Krystal about his latest children’s book, Caution! This Book Contains Dangerous Animals, illustrated by close friend Ben Williams.
As a proud Kamilaroi man, Corey highlights the importance of incorporating Indigenous culture and perspectives in children’s upbringing. He expresses his love for the land and how spending his time outside as a child nurtured his appreciation for native reptiles. Drawing from his lived experiences, extensive research and elaborate discussions with language holders, Corey puts a spotlight on the gap in First Nation children’s books about native reptiles.
‘To be able to put the first book together that features traditional languages and be the first person to actually write some of these names down is just a complete honour’
