Baseline: The Sophie Duker Show and the Politics of Comedy
Nana is joined by London-based writer and comedian Sophie Duker during her run at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival.
Sophie traces her comedy journey, from performing in an improv troupe at Oxford University to selling out shows at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and the Apollo Theatre, as well as winning Taskmaster. Together, Sophie and Nana unpack the politics of comedy, reflecting on access, identity and who gets to feel safe at a comedy show.
Sophie reflects on navigating material drawn from her lived experience as a Black queer woman while performing for predominantly white audiences. They also discuss the next generation of comics who are forging their own paths in an industry that remains largely white and male.
Sophie takes us inside the writing process behind The Sophie Duker Show, who she writes for, and why it is important for comedy to be both silly and brave.
Information and tickets for The Sophie Duker show are available here. Keep up with Sophie here. Sophie's book, Dong, is out in 2027.
