Interview
Baseline: The Rise of Book Clubs and the Reading Renaissance
Nana is joined by Naarm-based book enthusiasts Noah Da Costa (co-facilitator of Little Homey Book Club), as well as Phum’zile Mtetwa and Ilona Mutuku (co-founders of Yappers Book Club), to chat about the rise and significance of book clubs.
Together, they explore what is driving the growing popularity of book clubs among Gen Z, and how they have become joyful and powerful third spaces of community building, vulnerability, political consciousness and connection. They also reflect on the evolution of their reading habits and tastes, and share how they select texts that spark meaningful conversation for attendees at all stages of their reading journeys.
The conversation delves into the books that have deepened their understanding of Pan-Africanism and their Blackness, and how literature can connect us to our ancestors, our homelands, and our identities.
