Interview
Baseline: Sisonke Msimang on Boycotts, Apartheid and the Mythology of Nelson Mandela
Nana sits down with author and daughter of South African freedom fighter, Sisonke Msimang. Together, they discuss liberation movements, the history of apartheid in South Africa, and its connections to so‑called Australia and Palestine.
Sisonke unpacks the role of boycotts in driving political change, including the recent cancellation of the Adelaide Writers’ Festival. She and Nana then trace the roots of apartheid in South Africa and the rise of the anti‑apartheid movement. They also examine the connections between South Africa’s anti‑apartheid movement and Australia, as well as the similarities and differences between that movement and the ongoing genocide in Palestine.
Sisonke reflects on her family’s legacy as South African freedom fighters and interrogates the mythology surrounding Nelson Mandela, examining how his “sainthood” both supports and constrains South Africa’s struggle for freedom.
