Interview
Baseline: Going 'Through the Wall' with Rochelle Jordan
Nana sits down with visionary musician Rochelle Jordan to discuss her newest album, Through the Wall.
Lauded by critics including NPR, Pitchfork and BBC Radio, the London-born, Toronto-raised Rochelle talks to Nana about her creative process and what influenced and inspired the production of Through the Wall, after taking a four year hiatus. They discuss how Rochelle curates the sound of each of her albums and her desire for Through the Wall to invoke a bygone sonic world when “imaginations were explosive”.
Rochelle talks about her childhood and how her brother’s expansive music collection – ranging from jungle cuts to eclectic gospel house – shaped her evolution as a young musician and instilled a deep knowing of music within her, that she still draws from today.
Nana and Rochelle also discuss Rochelle’s relationship with the quiet and how advice she received from Björk – to take breaks and embrace other parts of her life – allows her to stay in flow as an artist, without succumbing to the pressure to constantly create or post on social media. The pair work through the spiritual meaning behind Rochelle calling herself a singer first and a songwriter second. And Rochelle unpacks the unique joy she’s experienced while touring Through the Wall.
Through the Wall is out now! Keep up with Rochelle on Instagram.
