Baseline: Genesis Owusu on REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE

The one and only Genesis Owusu returns to Baseline to chat with Nana about his newly released third album, REDSTAR WU & THE WORLDWIDE SCOURGE - a project the seven-time ARIA Award-winner describes as “weird as hell, Black as hell and political as hell”.

They discuss how the record speaks to global forces of oppression, tyranny and imperialism, reflecting Genesis’ hope that “this project can be the soundtrack to someone’s resistance.” He reflects on coming into his own political consciousness, creating art as therapy, and what he sees as his role as both the artist, Genesis Owusu, and himself, as Kofi.

Genesis also unpacks his creative process, from how he shaped the album’s lyrics to building its sonic world. He shares his experiences in bringing its visuals to life, including connecting with Ghanaian creatives during his trip home and what it felt like filming at Black Star Square - a landmark that symbolises Ghanaian post-colonial independence and freedom. Plus, he reflects on how his connections to people and place embody the album’s core themes of community and togetherness.

Genesis speaks about building community at his live shows, how he surrenders on stage, and proudly representing Ghana through his clothing, sound, visuals and performance.
