Baseline: Entering the Afrofuturist Planet of ‘TECHNIFRO‑185’ with Nū
Nana is joined in studio by Naarm-based, Ethiopian-Australian sound artist, vocalist and live coder, Fetle Wondimu Nega aka Nū, whose work blends non-Western musical traditions, improvisation and Afrofuturism. Using the live coding program Sonic Pi and her vocals, she creates immersive sonic worlds.
They delve into her debut EP TECHNIFRO-185, a five-track, bilingual Afrofuturist journey that weaves diasporic memories of Ethiopia with themes of grief, catharsis, and healing. Nū conjures the world of TECHNIFRO-185, immersing listeners in enchanted forests and shimmering ponds. Ethiopian samples, rich sound design, and electronic gospel motifs intertwine to evoke a sense of hope and renewal.
Together, they discuss Nū’s approach to improvisation as a live coder, how creating music in her first language Amharic shapes her artistry, the influence of nature on her practice, scoring her short fim A BEING, OF COURSE and the evolution of her performance work.
TECHNIFRO-185 is out now via Highly Contagious. Keep up with Nū.
