Totally Right is the debut album from Wrong Way Up, the Melbourne/Naarm-based electronic duo of Emmanuela Degery and Andrew "Diamond" Phillips. Formed in 2022 after their previous band Broadway Sounds, they distil that group's "outernational psychedelia" into a focused fusion of Afro-disco and synth-funk.
Drawing inspiration from pioneers like William Onyeabor and Frances Bebey, the album's eleven tracks combine vintage drum machines and synthesizers with Degery's dynamic, gospel-influenced vocals. Songs like 'Full Blast' and 'Make It Go Bang' reveal the essential elements: warm keyboard tones, electronic percussion, and vocal hooks that move between melody and chant.
Lyrics balance playful commentary with deeper themes - 'Try Before You Buy' explores judgement and character through the lens of online shopping, while 'Sweet Sweet Music' celebrates collective joy. As Wrong Way Up describes, it's "wordplay that expresses emotions on various aspects of humanity - social injustice, food, cats...and the friendship between the two of us."
Combined with dancefloor energy, a lo-fi visual aesthetic, and community-minded ethos, the duo offer music that's both nostalgic and distinctly of its time.
