Massive Shoe is the third album from Way Dynamic, the solo project of Dylan Young - a celebrated musician and songwriter also known for his work with Snowy, Cool Sounds, Emma Russack, Darren Hanlon and others. It's a playful and tender collection of folk, chamber pop and art rock styles.
Songs were shaped by band sessions that followed tours with Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman & The Wind. As always with Young, there's a strong sense of melody and poignancy, with a nod to influences like Burt Bacharach, Brian Wilson, and Randy Newman.
Lyrics are guided by an "ambiguity that washes over you rather than slaps you in the face", exploring relationships, communication breakdowns and human fallibility. 'People Settle Down' opens with rousing backing vocal hooks, while 'Miffed It' shifts to guitar-led territory, a reflective gem. Elsewhere, 'Ibiza' is a lightly psychedelic hit, leaning into hypnotic no wave grooves.
Massive Show is released through local label Spoilsport Records, and continues the trajectory from 2022's So Familiar and last year's Duck.
