BSRXV - 15 Years of Butter Sessions Records is the triple-vinyl anniversary compilation from Melbourne/Naarm label Butter Sessions. It collects 20 new and unreleased tracks across three 12-inch records from artists across the label's roster, including Sleep D, Jennifer Loveless, Guy Contact, Gonno, Kuniyuki, and Mosam Howieson among others.
The label was started around 2010 by childhood friends Corey Kikos and Maryos Syawish (who perform together as Sleep D) when they were high schoolers in Frankston. What began as a music blog grew into a Facebook group, then a mix series, parties at Mercat Basement, and eventually a vinyl label with roughly 70 releases. The broader Butter Sessions catalogue includes Roza Terenzi, Tornado Wallace, Cale Sexton, D. Tiffany, and many others. And the label's Domestic Documents compilations, put together with Michael Kucyk of Noise in my Head, have helped create a local map of electronic music in recent times.
Musically, BSRXV covers a lot of ground. There's deep dub-influenced house, techno, Balearic psychedelia, minimal trance, EBM, breakbeat, and industrial rave. Five of the 20 tracks come from Japanese artists — Kuniyuki, Gonno, Haruka, Mayurashka, and Yuzo Iwata — reflecting years of exchange between Butter Sessions and Japan's electronic music community.
The three discs each have their own feel. The first is spacious and dub-heavy, the second filled with peak-time energy, and the third turns more inward. Sleep D themselves close the comp with a big-room rave track featuring Naarm rap duo Posseshot. It's described as "a raw and adrenalised raver laced with a vocal that snarls closer to The Prodigy than hip-hop."
To celebrate the release Butter Sessions are planning an all-day festival on Good Friday at Collingwood Children's Farm, with 19 artists across three stages.
