rocky is the self-titled debut album from a new Naarm/Melbourne recording project featuring Xanthe Waite (Terry, Primo) and Raven Mahon (Grass Widow, Green Child), out now via Lulu's Sonic Disc Club.

The record ushers in the welcome union of two stalwarts of the city’s underground musical community, culminating in a sound that fittingly encapsulates the restless spirit of the various scenes they both inhabit.

rocky exists at the nexus of thoughtful songcraft and DIY experimentation that calls to mind the minimalist pop ingenuity in Young Marble Giants and Pel Mel, while sitting comfortably alongside local peers J. Mcfarlane's Reality Guest and Modal Melodies. What sets rocky apart is their ability to build on skeletal foundations through an impressive arsenal of violins, horns and synthetic textures, creating a sonic universe that is both remarkably immediate and deceptively complex.

Currently just a recording project, rocky's debut album is an important chapter in a post-lockdown era of local underground music: the result of being forced to re-evaluate the parameters of creativity in order to move things forward. The emergence of rocky proves that with the right people at the helm, there is still new ground to tread in a scene that is constantly adapting to its surroundings.
