Mango is the latest from Jacky Winter, the solo project of Naarm hero Phil Gionfriddo. He's played in countless bands including The Bowers and Dynamo, and more recently picked up an MPC after developing an obsession with Wu-Tang Clan's 36 Chambers. As Jacky Winter he channels garage-rock energy into fractured pop forms and machine-funk jams.
Mango is his third 12-inch release and first full statement since the 2019 EP The One Thing That I Own. It's a thrilling collaborative work that reunites Gionfriddo with Spencer Dyson, Mani Golding, and Dom Roff. Contributions from Colette are also featured alongside local luminaries Lost Animal, Stefan Blair, Dylan Young, and Liam McGorry.
The album extends Jacky Winter's signature sample-heavy, MPC-driven approach. Songs explore breakbeat, freak funk, and trip-hop territories. In Phil's words, this is "the freedom of the sampler, the power of friendship, and the fear of the blind corner."
