Winter Songs present six up-and-coming songwriters performing in the round.
All six will be on stage at the same time taking turns at performing a song and offering insights into their craft.
Featuring Molly McKew, Meghan Maike, Nighteyes, Marcella Wright, Mika James and Ada Duffy.
Molly Mckew (guitar/vox) performs dreamy, sad-girl songs drenched in harmonies that will make your heart sing. She released her debut solo EP, 'I couldnt grasp it' in August 2022 and she will release an album in 2023. You can follow her on instagram at @mollyalanamckew
Nighteyes is the newly launched solo project of New Zealand born, Melbourne based songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Rachel Trainor. Inspired by artists such as Chelsea Wolfe, Emma Ruth Rundle, and Fleetwood Mac, Nighteyes blurs genre boundaries, exploring electronic beats along with doom-inspired guitars and dream-like vocals. She finds inspiration in deep emotions, the skies above and her own personal experiences with the world around and within her. Nighteyes released her second single 'In The Wake' in February 2023, which was a follow up to the 2022 release of her debut single 'Lowlight'. She is currently working on her debut album, slated for release late 2023. Rachel has been a regular in the Melbourne music scene since 2012 with her other original project, psych-garage band Honeybone, as well as various other acts, along with touring professionally with other bands, circus and cabaret shows.
Mika James is leaping out from the behind the drumkit of Melbourne punk outfit The Vovos to unleash a spirited solo outing. An Unearthed finalist in 2022 with her passionate proclamation Witchy Woman, James’ musical output swerves from cinematic country to punk-infused blues.
Singing, writing and performing songs that invite the listener into a world of personal poetry and intimate portraits, James weaves melodious tunes sharpened with an edge of life experience. Born into a family immersed in the local music scene (a childhood of recording studios, gig-going and being surrounded by musicians), her music heaves with intent. James’ tunes evoke the cross-genre musical landscape populated by Weyes Blood, Sharon Van Etten and Laura Marling - even harking back to the world-building odes of Patti Smith, PJ Harvey and Bobbie Gentry.
Meghan Maike: In true country tradition, this Canadian singer-songwriter has found inspiration on the road – from Montreal to Mississippi, and now Melbourne. Born into folk and honed in country, Maike’s influences (from the greats; Emmylou, Gram, Neil, Lucinda, to indie heroes, The Sadies) spurred her to process the world through songwriting. Sights, sounds, places, experiences, textures, and seasons, find their way to the page. From childhood years in a folk community on Canada’s west coast, Maike was drawn to the buzzing music scene of Montreal – a move meant for a year that lasted a decade, and made a home for life…until the next calling, and it was no mistake that Maike then landed in the vibrant musical tapestry that is Melbourne. Circumstance brought Maike to live in Clarksdale, Mississippi, for seven years. With some time on her hands, and absorbing the magnetic musical energy of the delta, she kept on writing. This album is a faithful representation of time and place, and the relationship with the delta is ongoing. Settled back into Melbourne, she’s assembled a stellar band of musicians to lend the songs new light:
Marcella Wright: Since a young age, Marcella has enjoyed singing ad-lib into a cassette player, and now in into her voice memo function on a smart phone. All kinds of musings, reflections, and ramblings can be found on her ‘90s cassette tapes and modern day memos, some of which Marcella has honed and crafted into songs that anyone can listen to.
