Toby Mak is an Australian trumpeter who emerged in the Melbourne scene as a protégé of the late American trumpeter and arranger, Gil Askey. He released his debut album, Joyfull (featuring Jamie Oehlers) in 2001, before relocating to China for greater work opportunities. He has been based in Shanghai for over twenty years, during which time he established himself as an in-demand jazz soloist and versatile sideman. He has performed with leading U.S. jazz artists including Dee Dee Bridgewater, Chris Potter, Mark Turner, Theo Croker, Aaron Parks, Jaleel Shaw, Kris Davis, Ingrid Jensen, Helen Sung, and Andy Hunter. He was also active in the Chinese Pop scene, touring with “superstars” Karen Mok, Li Rong Hao, Tia Ray, and filming as an orchestra member on TV talent shows. In 2014 Mak took on the persona of TTechmak to produce his first electronic/jazz album, TTechmak Vol.1 “Unnecessary Update”. The album was extremely well received and helped expose Mak to a whole new audience. His latest jazz album, “Afternoon in Shanghai”, is a tribute to Gil Askey. Relocating here, Mak is joined by Damien Banzigou (an electric bassist and producer who has also relocated here from Shanghai), together with long-time collaborators, Mark Fitzgibbon (piano) and Danny Fischer (drums) to perform his new originals and arrangements of some select standards.

Presented by the Melbourne Jazz Co-operative, with funding assistance from Creative Australia and Music Australia.
