The Sounds of Silent presents the iconic movie 'Modern Times', starring Charlie Chaplin at the Brunswick Ballroom .

Recreating the silent movie going experience of the 1920's the jazz quintet comprising some of Melbournes most accomplished musicians,  bring this movie to life in a way not experienced for one hundred years.

Modern Times is a rarely seen satirical romantic black comedy, written and directed by Charlie Chaplin and a commentary on the unemployment and financial conditions people faced during the great depression created by the arrival of modern industrialization. The movie has surprising parallels with today's society, a century later. Accompanied by amazing improvised jazz this will be a great show.

With a voice described as ‘truly astonishing’ by Rolling Stone, Anna Smyrk is a powerful singer and song-maker from Naarm. Her songs are anthemic indie bombshells, pairing vulnerable lyrics with explosive arrangements and undeniable hooks.

Anna has had a massive year, with highlights including touring North America and Europe and recording a new EP in Nashville. ‘A significant songwriter with an exceptional voice’ (Backseat Mafia UK), Anna’s new record sits somewhere in the sonic realm between Middle Kids, Sharon Van Etten and Maggie Rogers, all stamped with her signature voice and glittering production.

She comes to BABs to launch the first single from the new record, joined by her all-star band: Alex Burkoy (Tinpan Orange), Holly Thomas (Husky) and Loz Irwin-Ray (Belly Savalas).
