Released in 2021, Oaatchpai was nominated for the 2021 ARIA Jazz Album of the Year.
Melbourne bassist-composer Sam Anning’s fourth album as bandleader ‘Oaatchapai’ showcases his compositional flair with references to indie rock, echoes of Charles Mingus and spoken word soundscapes. The lineup of pianist Andrea Keller, trumpeter Mat Jodrell, saxophonists Carl Mackey and Julien Wilson from the award-winning Across a Field as Vast as One.

“One of the great pleasures for me being involved in this musical world of jazz is watching how musicians develop and change over time. I’ve recorded Sam Anning on many occasions as a bassist in different settings but it’s in recent years that his compositional flair has become evident. His sextet album ‘Across A Field As Vast As One’ showed this and the new album ‘Oaatchapai’ extends it, with the extra voice of Theo Carbo on guitar. It’s music that surprises, intrigues, sometimes challenges as well as heals.”
