On June 21, Quality Used Cars will perform their newest single “Tullamareena” for the first time.

Written in consultation and with permission from Uncle Bill Nicholson and the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung Cultural Heritage Aboriginal Corporation, “Tullamareena” is the story of the Wurundjeri man who the area of Tullamarine is said to be named after – told through the lens of Quality Used Cars’ singer and songwriter Francis Tait.

Built upon a bed of rollicking country guitars, whining pedal steel and a cinematic horn-section arrangement and framed by the lines:

“Tullamareena, Tullamareena, Oh How I’ve Let You Down,

It Shouldn’t Take A Man 26 Years To Learn The Namesake Of His Town”,

Quality Used Cars have sought to create a place for Tullamareena’s strength and resistance in the face of colonialism to be acknowledged, while recognising there is so much more to do in this space.

“I’d been telling people I lived out near Tullamarine for 26 years before I heard this story. Anyone within my immediate community who I asked about it was unaware of it too – and I asked a lot of people. The thing I feel like I’m best at in the world is writing songs, so I’ve tried to use that as best as I can to benefit this story and the greater message around it.”

“As a white man who has grown up on Wurundjeri Country, it’s not my place to tell this story as if I’ve discovered it, because as long as I’ve been alive it’s been there. I hope through this song and with the guidance of Uncle Bill Nicholson, we’ve been able to create a space for Tullamareena’s story to reach a few more people and can spark a fire in people to go and educate themselves more - as hearing this story did for me.”
