The widescreen, romantic pop project from Zac Pennington, of American cult bands Parenthetical Girls and Xiu Xiu, and Melbourne composer Prudence Rees-lee.
The Hollywood/Melbourne/Naarm-based duo celebrate the release of the group’s landmark debut album, Minor Works — a record for/of the end of the world.
On record, Minor Works’ hyper-cinematic productions were recorded between Los Angeles, Melbourne/Naarm, Moscow and New York — with percussion programming by Deerhoof’s Greg Saunier, contributions from celebrated composer Jherek Bischoff (Angel Olsen, Xiu Xiu, David Byrne), plus a 17-piece Russian chamber orchestra conducted over Zoom (no, really). Live, Popular Music strip the melodrama down to ruthless electro-pop efficiency. Like the Theatre of the Absurd, only with synthesizers.
Renowned for brilliantly devastatingly live performances, this is a must for anyone who believes in the redemptive power of Popular Music.
Support on the night come from Denim Owl whose current lineup consists of Janita Foley, Joe Foley, Jill Farrar, Irit Rozenfeld and Stephanie Hooke.
Forming with the mission of bringing Janita's songs to life, the band mates wantonly wield electric and slide guitar, fretless bass, backing vocals, clicks and hand percussion, an old Casio that sounds like "ghost children", classic organ tones, and electronic sounds and drum beats from an OP-1 synthesiser.
The group of owls share handsome tunes, scuffed up by extended instrumental wig-outs, and at every live show, aim to Mesmerise Or Die in the unapologetic manner of a native Australian peacock spider, performing its lustrous wooing dance. The band will be releasing their highly anticipated album in early 2024.
With an opening set by Maxi Dress, the freshest daisies on the scene. Founded this year in Naarm/Melbourne and comprising of musicians Chloe Sanger, Geoffrey O’Connor (Crayon Fields, Sly Hats, Montero), and Hank Clifton-Williamson (Sarah Mary Chadwick), they play down-tempo synth pop that has been captivating audiences around town. This will be their fourth gig, fasten your seat belts. Did someone say supergroup?
