Plovers are dead. After 7 long, fruitless years in Melbourne's punk underground - mostly spent unsuccessfully chasing the high of their music once being described as "a shit Spotify playlist" by Jon Toogood from 90's alt-rock legends Shihad - it's time for them to finally admit that enough is enough and to hang up their wings.
But there's still one matter to attend to. Their debut (and final) record Fear the Man Who Hides in Light releases on 1 August, and it’s years of work distilled into a tight 35 minutes of kaleidoscopic fury. Borrowing from genres as diverse as post-hardcore, dance punk, and sludge metal, Plovers tell tales of resisting racism, greed, discrimination, and corporate cronyism set to the catchiest batch of 11 songs to come out of the local scene in years. It's a message that champions that all change must start from within, that active resistance is a mandatory part of improving the ways that we treat each other, and that the best way to fire yourself up is to crank up an ear-pulverisingly loud rock song and kick out the jams.
There’ll only be one opportunity to celebrate and mourn in equal measure. Join Plovers and their special guests The Maggie Pills, Turn South, and Everyday Believer for the final time in the Bergy Bandroom on Saturday 31 August. There’ll be blood, sweat, and tears from everyone involved, but somebody’s gotta put the fun in funeral, right?
