Composer, musician and songwriter of unusual breadth, Phia Exiner releases her third album, When I’m Holding You, I’m Holding Me on Saturday 19th July. The night will showcase the world-class band at the heart of the album, which was recorded live with Exiner on piano, Tony Floyd (the Black Sorrows) on drums and Jonathan Zion (Deborah Conway, Lior) on double bass, plus special guests.
Originally training as a jazz pianist, Phia relocated to Europe in her early twenties where she developed a cult following with her unique use of the kalimba (thumb piano) accompanied by loop and effect pedals. Upon her return to Melbourne she formed the beloved choir Melbourne Indie Voices, a now 600 voice choir that sings her own ground-breaking arrangements of the very best indie artists.
This album celebrates Phia’s return to her roots, reflecting an artist confident in herself, where she is and where she’s come from, in her return to the piano, the instrument of her youth and the instrument her mother played to her. When I’m Holding You, I’m Holding Me was written in the brief snatches of time when her son napped in the year after his birth, through sleep deprivation and the deepening understanding of herself as she grew into becoming a mother.
