Paper Jane, original Americana band return to the Coburg RSL Saturday 2nd July with two sets of exceptional roots music from 3pm.
Recently shortlisted for The Music Victoria’s ‘Best Regional Act’, Paper Jane feature wooden sonic tones and fragile unprocessed voices. The band’s soundscape is from an era when songs weren’t rolled in tinsel. The tunes are catchy and raw, delivered with intense harmonies and just the right amount of swagger. Are Paper Jane country, gospel, celtic or blues? Yes they are all of that and more.
In 2012, Paper Jane released their debut album ‘First Morning Song’ to full page reviews in The Age and Sydney Morning Herald. The following year the band was unearthed by Triple J. And then, other than a few local festivals, Paper Jane faded into relative obscurity and it’s members onto other projects. But the stage called, the songs came and the band had more to say.
Frontman Buck Edwards and stalwart drummer Tim Lane were delighted to team up with fretless bassman Dom Redfern, and
with that the rhythm section went up a gear. So Paper Jane got busy recording and honing the new sound till one dark lockdown day, they released their second LP ‘Across the Reservoir’. The new record spans eight years of soulful conjuring, a distillation of what comes from the heart and heralds the cessation of the long silence from the band. With a feature on Post to Wire and the International Americana Music Show’s Best of 2020, Paper Jane have made a definitive statement that the first record was no fluke. A recent and excellent addition to the line up, fiddle queen Cherry Lee Bufton has joined the boys to put some quality finish into this pie and they’re excited to share the rich and tasty results.
Paper Jane leaves the sounds exposed for the listener, joyous and evocative. Their music is filled with highs and lows that demand your attention and move you with it. If you have not discovered the music of Paper Jane, the band makes a humble submission to the Australian Roots Songbook.
