Nevena & Stefan are a cousin duo doing what most Melbourne duos aren’t: tunes from a country that no longer exists. (Cue the Twilight Zone theme.) N&S perform stripped-back renditions of songs that can best be described as a hotchpotch of pop, roots, jazzy blues, soul and alternative rock from Yugoslavia. Common themes are threaded throughout such as love, longing, melancholy, and joy — naturally, one needn’t understand the language to feel and grasp the music.
Nevena has spent most of her life performing, from singing with a jazz quartet back in 2006 to being a soprano soloist in the "Kornelije Stanković" chorale for over ten years. Stefan is a fine young guitarist with immense talent, experience and musical instinct.
Coming off their previous successful shows around Melbourne, Nevena & Stefan's "Music for a Milestone" gig—celebrating five years as a duo—will visit beloved songs from Yugoslavia. This beautiful, joyous, bittersweet and often-haunting music shaped the lives of many who now call Australia home.
