Grammy-nominated saxophonist Melissa Aldana is something of a trailblazer – she is both the first South American and the first female instrumentalist to win the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone competition. The Brooklyn-based tenor player from Santiago, Chile, has garnered international recognition for her visionary work as a bandleader and prolific performer.
Bringing to Melbourne her remarkable quartet, Aldana will be performing music from her acclaimed debut Blue Note album 12 Stars. A highly emotive offering, the music on 12 Stars grapples with concepts of childrearing, familial forgiveness, acceptance, and self-love – whilst showcasing the adventurousness and technical prowess of this incredible quartet.
Across 3 shows at MIJF, Aldana will be performing alongside an incredible international band with Lage Lund on guitar, Kush Abadey on drums and Pablo Menares on bass.
