Melbourne’s own Jazzlab Orchestra presses re-set on the big band tradition: creating visionary, original, genre-bending jazz music with a focus on diversity and inclusivity. Led by composer/arrangers Cheryl Durongpisitkul, Madison James Smith and Elliot Lamb, the orchestra celebrates Melbourne’s next generation of instrumentalists.

This month we feature a special guest composer/performer, Jorik Bergman.

Born in Leiden, Netherlands, Jorik Bergman is a jazz flutist, arranger, composer, and bandleader whose work moves fluidly between composition and improvisation. She completed her studies in Composition at the Maastricht Conservatory (B.A., 2020) and the Cologne University of Music (M.A., 2023). Bergman leads her own big band, trio, and duo “Jocra Likra,” and the electric quintet “Take Me to Space.” In 2024 and 2025, she collaborated with Marshall Allen and members of the Sun Ra Arkestra. She has performed widely across Europe, received multiple international composition awards, and has been an official NICA artist since September 2024.

The Orchestra continues the tradition of the Bennetts Lane Big Band with a monthly residency, with a focus on all-original repertoire by both current and previous band members.
