“The real gem is Hetty’s voice, stunningly evocative and tinged with an infinite sadness.” John Freeman (UK) 2011

Travel back in time as we re-imagine our favourite New Wave songs from artists Kate Bush, David Bowie, Echo & The Bunnymen, Madness and more. As incongruous as it may seem to mix four jazz artists with a synthesized genre born out of the excessive rebellion of the punk movement, there are many similarities between jazz and the New Wave movement. Both had a global impact on society, fashion and culture; and without any doubt defined a generation. With beautiful arrangements by James Sherlock and Ben Grayson, previously requested for the launch of British Artists Gilbert & George at MONA in Hobart, this project returns to The JazzLab ‘by special request’.

Born in England, raised in Australia and now based in Paris, jazz vocalist Hetty Kate is described as “the real deal” and “one of the best swing-style vocalists on the current scene” (Will Friedwald, Jazz Critic & Author USA). With her clarion tone and bright, sweet sound, Hetty approaches each performance with a natural musicality, and is often lauded for her ‘effortless’ voice and the fun she has with the music.

In her career Hetty toured for many years with acclaimed Australian luminary James Morrison and has performed with masters Peter Bernstein, Rick Margitza, Simon Tedeschi and Charl du Plessis. She has been the featured soloist with eight orchestras, including the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, and performed at many premier jazz festivals internationally. Highlights include the New York Winter Jazz Festival (USA), Sapporo International Jazz Festival (Japan), Ascona Jazz Festival (Switzerland), Prague Proms (Czech Republic), Malta International Jazz Festival (Malta), Jazz sur Seine (France) and the Cavell Leitch International Jazz Festival (New Zealand).
