WA-based Gemma Farrell Quintet (GFQ) will embark on their first East Coast tour in November 2019. GFQ will perform at the Perth International Jazz Festival before heading east for shows at the Sydney International Women's Jazz Festival, the Brisbane Jazz Music Institute, and Melbourne’s Jazzlab.

Since their debut at the Perth International Jazz Festival in 2015, the exciting jazz-funk outfit has garnered praise for their daring and inventive sound, as well as earning a slew of award nominations. The quintet’s debut album, Organised Chaos, was nominated for a 2019 Australian Jazz Bell Award, and the group has just been nominated for three WA Music (WAM) Awards: Best Jazz Act, Best Brass/String/Woodwind Instrumentalist—Gemma Farrell, and Best Bassist—Kate Pass. At the 2018 WAMs, the GFQ was nominated for Best Jazz Act, while another of Gemma’s bands, MFG, was nominated for Song of the Year in the Jazz Category for Farrell’s composition Tony Umbridge.

Together with group leader Gemma Farrell on saxophones, the group is Sam Hadlow on trombone, Dan Garner on guitar, Kate Pass on bass, and Ryan Daunt on drums. Originally from Perth, Farrell has studied at conservatories in Australia and the Netherlands and forged a reputation as one of Australia’s finest jazz composers and performers, playing alongside numerous musical legends, including John Farnham, Branford Marsalis, and James Morrison. She is passionate about jazz education, lecturing at a number of institutions, with a focus on young women in jazz.

GFQ’s ability to break free from preconceived expectations of the jazz canon sees them create beautiful compositions that somehow still retain a familiar sense of belonging.
