The original Capitol Theatre Orchestra in 1929, led by American violinist Jan Rubini

The Capitol Theatre Orchestra is excited to invite you to an afternoon of music from the “Roaring Twenties” at the Brunswick Ballroom on Saturday 22 February.

The Capitol Theatre Orchestra was established in 1924 for the opening of Walter Burley Griffin’s masterpiece, The Melbourne Capitol, in Swanston Street.  The Orchestra was re-established in November last year for The Capitol’s centenary celebrations.

In the 1920s every self-respecting ballroom, theatre, hotel and dance hall had a resident jazz orchestra.  A hundred years later we are keeping alive the exciting, vibrant music of the “Jazz Age” and bringing it to today’s 21st Century audiences.

We play toe-tapping numbers like “Happy Feet” and “You’re Nobody’s Sweetheart Now” and unforgettable classics like “Singing in the Rain” and “If I Had a Talking Picture of You”.
