Satdy arvo with the beast-- yum! This time at Open Studio Bete Noire is pleased to have Dave Allardice on piano, serving up our jazz, latin, cuban bits with grit and gusto! Come groove with us!

Bête Noire was formed in Melbourne in 2015 by the legendary Australian drummer Graham Morgan and vocalist Jan Tankard in collaboration with Craig Newman on bass and special guest Dave Allarice on piano.

These four consummate musicians collaborate to explore and rework familiar, and less familiar jazz compositions to create a compelling quartet in which the shared joy of each other’s skills is a pleasure to behold.

Influenced by masters of jazz and Latin music, from Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk, Benny Golson and McCoy Tyner to the Cuban composer Ernesto Lecuona and Spanish flamenco there is also abundant room for improvisation as they delve in to many facets of jazz of which they all, and often guest musicians, contribute.

Bête Noire will transport you deep to a NYC jazz club, then add a bold dash of Spanish emotion with colour and humour, they will then twist the top off with Cuban rhythms and drumming that leave audiences in awe.

Liaden Zane is an emerging singer-songwriter whose unique sound is a concoction of her wide influences. She blends folk, pop, the alternative sounds of the early to mid 90s and strong undertones of Celtic music all together through her own intimate storytelling and performance. First launching onto the stage at the tender age of 17, Liaden has her first EP, 'Riddled in Truth', under her belt. After the last few years of uncertainty, she can't wait to reconnect with audiences through music.

The Mina Yu Trio consists of some of the most promising jazz talent in Melbourne.

Having studied for 7 years in the USA at the renowned Berklee College of Music and Manhattan School of Music, Mina plays contemporary jazz with a quality and authenticity that captures the New York sound.

The band also includes Berklee-trained drummer, Ben Charnley and Rookies bassist Oscar Neyland.

Having recently been featured in a sell out show in Melbourne Women’s Jazz Festival, Mina has also performed at the Melbourne International Jazz Festival, Hamer Hall, St Paul’s Cathedral, the Melbourne Recital Centre as well as le Poisson Rouge and the Knitting Factory in NYC.

Expect a night of high-calibre trio jazz played with warmth and sophistication.
