Known for his individual and expressive style, Tenor Sax player Matthias Erlewein has been a highly regarded member of the German jazz scene for decades.
Born in a small town in the South of Germany in 1961, Matthias went on to study in Graz and Cologne and was the recipient of many international awards including the Blue Note Jazz Research award which enabled him to travel to New York to record with John Abercrombie.
Over the years Matthias has performed with the German Jazz Orchestra, the Bob Brookmeyer Art Orchestra as well as all five German Radio Big Bands.
Matthias has shared the stage with John Beasley, Bobby Burgess, Till Brönner, Dollar Brand, Bob Degen, Peter Erskine, Joe Gallardo, John Goldsby, Wolfgang Haffner, Joachim Kühn, Lee Konitz, Albert Mangelsdorff, Adrian Mears, Nguyen Le, Bob Mintzer, John Marschall, Don Rader, Florian Ross, Jochen Rückert, Claus Stötter, John Scofield, Marcus Stockhausen, Kenny Wheeler and Martin Wind, performing all over the world, most recently in the Lincoln Centre New York.
This is Matthias' first time performing in Australia.
