Melbourne has been going through an African music boom, with more and more demand for African music. Yusupha Ngum & the Affia Band bring to Melbourne their own style of African music.

Yusupha Ngum has had a career as a superstar in Gambia, West Africa. He has won or been nominated for several Gambian music awards, including "Most Radio Played Artist Male", "Best Mbalax Artist", and "Best Traditional Artist".

African music is dynamic. There have been many sophisticated African singers and musicians of the past and today - people like Youssou N'dour, Nneka, Miriam Makeba, Tinariwen, Angelique Kidjo, and Ladysmith Black Mambazo, to name a few.

Here in Australia, Yusupha Ngum and the Affia Band were nominated by the chair of the Healesville Music Festival as one of the "stand out" performances, and as "among some of the big names that really pulled the crowds". Their song "Gainde" was widely praised last year in the Gambian and Senegalese media.
