ALI BARTER:

Following the success of 2019’s Hello I’m Doing My Best, and more recently, ‘Twisted Up’, Ali Barter returns to announce her forthcoming Chocolate Cake EP, out April 30 on Inertia Music and share its second single. New track ‘You Get In My Way’ maps the moments of claustrophobia felt in serious relationships, exacerbated by Barter’s restless nature. A playful video accompanies the release, boasting the same production team behind ‘Twisted Up’; We Made That.

On the new single Ali explains “I wrote ‘You Get In My Way’ in Nashville in 2019. I was travelling without my husband and had this feeling of freedom to do all the silly things I did when I was single, like eat lolly snakes for dinner, stay up really late watching the Real Housewives or plan an impromptu trip to Brazil. I often have funny conversations with my friends in long term relationships about the dumb things we would do if our partner wasn’t around. Ultimately I don’t want to do these things, but it was fun to explore the feeling of rebelling from the security of a long term relationship.”

The Chocolate Cake EP was written across both hemispheres. Barter engaged in writing sessions in Los Angeles and Nashville before the crushing reality of COVID-19 jeopardized her first US tour and forced her back home to isolate in Melbourne. The EP was rounded out remotely with the help of creative minds Harlan Silverman, Lost Boy, K-Flay, Brandon James and constant IRL collaborator Oscar Dawson. Previous Chocolate Cake single ‘Twisted Up’ was added to triple j and Tone Deaf, NME, Purple Sneakers, Music Feeds have all thrown support behind the unconventional pop star.

In 2019 Barter’s confessional Hello, I’m Doing My Best struck a nerve with fans worldwide, garnering support at home from the likes of triple j (Feature Album) Pitchfork, Line of Best Fit, Consequence of Sound, Nylon, Clash Magazine.

Pre-COVID Barter went global; completing her debut overseas tour, including dates around Europe, performing at Reeperbahn 2019 and whistle-stop shows in Los Angeles and Mexico City. She then returned home to Australia for the Hello, I’m Doing my Best tour which saw her sell out shows in Melbourne and Sydney. Last November/ December saw the perfect ending to 2020 with Ali Barter touring throughout regional New South Wales & Victoria, much to the delight of fans who sold-out eight shows.
