The International Pop Underground: Anna B Savage's New LP is About Love, The Sea & Ireland
Anna B Savage's new album, You & i are Earth, is about love. Love for a person, and love for a place, and how those two feelings can be interwoven together.
The 34-year-old's earliest songs —collected on a self-released 2015 EP called 1— were shockingly vulnerable works of candid confessional and difficult emotion. Those kinds of feelings, and those types of songs, persisted across her first two albums, 2021's A Common Turn and 2023's in|FLUX.
But by the time she set out work on her third album, Savage was in a completely different place, both literally and figuratively: having entered a loving relationship that found her relocating her life from her hometown, London, to Dublin.
"I definitely had the intention of making it a kind of extended love letter," says Savage.
"I was making in|FLUX knowing that I'd fallen in love, knowing that I'd moved to Ireland, knowing that I wanted to write about that stuff in the future."
Talking on The International Pop Underground with Anthony Carew, Savage discusses her new record, the feeling of living closer to nature, being a songwriter in a relationship, writing a song about female wanking, and daring to be sincere.
