The International Pop Underground: Daniel Romano Doesn't Think He's Prolific, He Just Likes Making Stuff

In 2023, Daniel Romano didn't release an album.

It was quite a change of pace, given that his principle project, Daniel Romano's Outfit, released 5 LPs (and a live album!) across 2020-2022. And given that the Canadian songwriter is famed for his work in a bunch of projects, from a host of solo albums through Spider Bite, Ancient Shapes, Alias Ensemble, and Daniel, Fred & Julie.

Romano, however, doesn't identify with the one thing he gets constantly called: 'prolific'.

"I just like to make stuff, and keep busy, and experiment," Romano shrugs. "I don't think of it, necessarily, from the standpoint of it being a lot, or particularly prolific. I just make stuff all the time."

Speaking with Anthony Carew on The International Pop Underground for the release of the new Outfit album, Too Hot To Sleep, Romano talks about the record, its wild conceptual predecessor La Luna, plus his creative drive, teenage slacker years, album artwork, and the blurred lines between his many projects.
