Sonny Smith and Melbourne share a love that’s real! Sonny’s been drawn back to our seductive city time and again to play Sonny & the Sunsets’ patented brand of busted beach-pop and otherworldly doo-wop-with-chops, and in doing so has found a warm place in the hearts of his Melbourne fans – a mutual affection that extends to Melbourne’s myriad music makers. Along the way Sonny’s gathered a coterie of local music legends – Steph Hughes (Dick Diver/Boomgates), Mark Monnone (Monnone Alone/Lost and Lonesome Records), Tilly Perry (Life Drawing) and Shaun Gionis (Boomgates) – who’ve joined his ever-evolving band of Sunsets.
Now the maverick San Franciscan songwriter and artist defines the relationship by making Melbourne home to the inaugural, semi-annual festival Sonny Daze. Headlined by Sonny & the Sunsets, the painstakingly programmed line-up features NINE of Sonny’s Melbourne (and honorary Hobartian) favourites.
Housed in a venue which named their restaurant Sonny’s in his honour, the Sonny Daze festival will be held across two stages at The Curtin on Saturday, October 20. Running 4pm till late (with a break at 7pm for mess hall-style dinner and roving entertainment in Sonny’s restaurant!) Sonny Daze will be the place to soak in the sweet juices of Australia’s bountiful band scene… with a Sonny cherry on top.
