Celebrate the online launch of twelve new screen and sound works by young and emerging artists.
Artists: Bianca Billy Raffin, Lazar Feldman, Leena Luu, and Grace Quiason, Kim Le, Michelle Nguyen, Rebecca Riggs-Bennett, and Mara Erin Staller
Each year, Signal commissions artists aged 16 to 25 to create new works for the Signal Screen and Sound Walk. In 2020, with the Signal building closed to help reduce the spread of COVID-19, we put out the call for proposals from young screen and sound artists to develop new works for digital presentation and form new collaborations online.
Commissions were awarded to screen artists Bianca Billy Raffin, Lazar Feldman, Leena Luu, and Grace Quiason; and sound artists Kim Le, Michelle Nguyen, Rebecca Riggs-Bennett, and Mara Erin Staller.
Throughout the 12 week program, each young artist developed a solo screen or sound work and collaborated with another commissioned artist to create a second, audio visual piece.
They received technical and creative support through weekly online development workshops led by sound artist Ryan Granger and video artist Yandell Walton. Each artist also received one-on-one mentoring from established artists and industry professionals. The screen artists were mentored by Archie Barry, Aaron Rees, Lara Toms, and Emile Zile; and the sound artists were mentored by Bridget Chapell, Yeo Choong, Adam Hunt, and Thembi Soddell.
Hear from young artists about their process, get a taste of their new works, and be among the first to experience them online.
