Melbourne artist-on-the-rise Shannen James continues her reign as one of the country’s most exciting songwriters today with the release ‘Separate Ways’ – a striking alt-pop moment that sees James take a confident step into seriously infectious territory. With an effortlessness that saturates this brighter, poppier sound, ‘Separate Ways’ bounces out of the speakers in a flurry of syncopated beats, with James’s unmistakable, velvety-smooth vocal, weaving its magic across the track. ‘Separate Ways’ was premiered by Bridget Hustwaite on triple j Good Nights & was previewed to lucky fans across the artist’s first Australian, East Coast headline tour – whereby she sold out all shows across Melbourne (two shows), Sydney & Brisbane.

‘Separate Ways’ follows her recent single, the glistening ‘Superstitious’ – added straight to triple j rotation and peaking at #22 on the US Submodern Singles chart. The track was also supported by streaming services including Spotify (Front Left, New Music Friday, Fresh Finds in the US & more) as well as Apple Music (NMD, Alt Pop, Heaps Indie, Mellow Days & more). ‘Superstitious’ followed Shannen’s breakthrough 2020 EP Arrows, which included hits such as the bright title track Arrows, ‘Collide’, her 2019 debut, Something In The Water, and ‘Empty Eyes’. The EP earnt Shannen adds across triple j & triple j unearthed (including a Feature Artist nod), Spotify, Apple Music, champions across the likes of NME (“a slice of indie pop sunshine that stokes anticipation for an LP”), Bigsound (2020 lineup), a remix of EP track ‘Seventeen’ by The Rubens, live performances on The Sound and shows alongside G Flip, Tia Gostelow & Men I Trust.
